Morning Routine: College Edition

If there’s one thing a majority of us college students struggle with it’s waking up for those dreaded 9am lectures! I mean, who invented the idea of having to learn SO early in the morning anyways?!
Well whoever did suggest the idea of 9am lectures must have been one hell of a morning person!

Unfortunately, I have had my fair share of 9am lectures, and have admittedly found myself severely struggling to get out of bed.
But over the four years I’ve spent at University, I’ve naturally created a set morning routine; one which has really helped improve my mornings and set me up for a productive day ahead.
I’ve noticed that mornings are a key determinant of how the rest of your day will pan out, and having a good morning essentially leads to having a good day.
So if you are one of those people who really struggle in the early hours, the following will hopefully benefit you as they have benefited me!
Put your phone on AIRPLANE MODE
It’s SO important to make sure you don’t have a night of disturbed sleep to be able to feel fresh in the morning.
Having your phone connected to wifi is just connecting you to the insomniacs awake at 4am.
They may not have 9am lectures, but honey, YOU DO! So do yourself a favour and disconnect with the night owls.
Fix up an alarm system that works for you
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT rely on other people to wake you up in the morning!
Fix up an alarm on your phone or use an actual alarm clock from Ikea.
A really good tip is to place your phone far enough that you can’t roll over to turn it off, so you’ll have to physically get out of bed, which should essentially get you up.

Morning Bathroom Routine
I usually head straight for the bathroom first thing in the morning and follow a simple routine…
I splash some cold water on my face first thing, something that i find really wakes me up, especially in Winter (sounds like torture I know, but trust me this works).
I brush my teeth with a toothpaste that is REALLY minty - the strong mint makes freshens up the mouth which makes me feel more fresh in gene
ral (I enjoy using the crest toothpaste).
Then I take a quick 5 minute shower - I literally time myself by putting a timer on my phone
I spritz on my favourite perfume or apply some scented product right after the shower
Make your bed
Even if I don’t do anything else in the morning, this is one thing I 100% without fail do. I genuinely feel like making my bed makes the biggest difference to my day.
There have been days where I haven’t done this and felt like something was lacking in my day.
I don’t know what it is, but it just helps me clear my thoughts, making my day more organised and productive, which is great for feeling more motivated throughout a day full of classes.
Drink a glass of Hot Lemon Water
This is one of my favourite things to have in the morning. It’s a great detox for the system and flushes out all the toxins.
Lemon helps with metabolism and digestion.
Basically, It just helps get a healthy start to the day and will put you in a positive mood!
Eat a Healthy/Nutritious Breakfast
This is, in my opinion, the best meal of the day and I never skip breakfast.
It’s so important to provide your brain with fuel in the morning, especially before a lecture.
Eating a balanced, healthy breakfast will keep you full until your next class break and help you concentrate and be more efficient during class time!
Catch up on the news/Read the paper
Catching up on news highlights on TV or reading the local paper has become essential to my morning.
I feel that this is the best time to get myself informed on what’s happening around the world or what’s going on in my own city.
I either watch the news while sipping on my cup of coffee or read the news on my phone on the way to class.
Doing this makes me feel well educated and motivates me to actively learn and process knowledge throughout the day.

Groom Yourself
On the days I decide to be ‘lazy’ or look like a ‘bum’, I end up being less productive.
But the days where I make an effort to dress well, do a little bit of makeup and fix up my hair, I feel like I’m ready to accomplish a lot.
It helps boost my confidence as well as boost my mood, so I feel like I can be super productive and efficient!
I hope these tips help your mornings become better, and maybe even transform you into a morning person.

I can’t say i’m fully a morning person myself, and I definitely have mornings where I feel like it should be illegal to be awake so early, but changing up some of my habits have helped me own my mornings!
